Analysing the contents page: similar product research

Q magazine October 2008


This magazines contents page has been presented in a single page spread. It has the main articles down the left side of the page with a large image of 'The Courteeners' on the right side of the page to go with one of the articles in the magazine, this helps to catch the readers attention when you first open the magazine. There is a smaller image at the bottom of the page which is also used to illustrate on of the 'review' articles. This creator of this magazine has used black text over a white background, two of the headings have been written in white text surrounded by a red background, this helps to draw the readers eye to them. There is an 'Oasis Special' feature down the left of the page, it still uses black text on the white background but the heading and numbers have been written in gold text with a box around it. This helps to show that it is a special feature and helps to separate it from the other articles and features on the page. The typography on this page has been presented using 6 different font sizes and 7 different font styles. The audience for this magazine is mainly aimed at males although it isn't specific, the genre of this magazine is Indie rock music. On this contents page the second person narrative has not been used and the language which has been used is formal. This contents page does not match the house style of the magazine as it uses a different image to what the front cover uses.

Spin Magazine- August 2009


Like the Q magazine analysed above, this magazine's contents is also a single page spread. It has the main features down the left side of the page, with a large image of 'Duffy' down the right side of the page to illustrate one of the main features in the magazine. This contents page conforms to the stereotypical magazine as it uses black text on a grey/white background. The typography on this contents page has been presented using 5 different styles of font and 7 different sizes of font, the headings have been written in bold text to help separate the different articles and features. The article page numbers have been written in blue text which also helps to separate the articles. The genre of this magazine is pop and the audience is male and female teenagers and older adults. This contents page doesn't use the second person narrative and uses formal language and matches the house style of the magazine as it has an image of 'Duffy' on the front cover and the contents page.
